WHAT HAPPENED?
The Red Devils are, after seeing their club captain linked with a summer move to Real Madrid, adamant that the Portuguese playmaker is not for sale. That is, however, doing little to quieten the exit talk at Old Trafford.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Fernandes is 30 years of age and aware of the need to compete for major honours on a regular basis at club level before it becomes too late. He is a talismanic presence for United, but every player has a price.

DID YOU KNOW?
City are in the market for another creative influence in their midfield, as Kevin De Bruyne prepares to depart as a free agent, and Fernandes would tick that box. United need to raise funds, amid controversial cost-cutting measures, and that could leave them open to sale.

WHAT TEDDY SHERINGHAM SAID
Red Devils legend Sheringham, who formed part of the club’s 1999 Treble-winning squad, has told : “You know, all we’ve heard coming out of Manchester United is that pretty much every top player has a price, no one is unsellable because of the finances, then perhaps a deal for Bruno to join Manchester City as De Bruyne’s replacement could be struck.
“Manchester United need to rebuild. It’s a dire situation at the club. They’re going to need money to buy players.
“If City chucked £100 million-plus at United for Bruno Fernandes, 30 years-old, maybe they consider it. I think I know what Jim Ratcliffe would say. Jim Ratcliffe would have a look and say that's a few staff that we don't have to sack in the summer. Let’s do a deal.”
